fascia & muscle
A 2-4-1 stretch for the front of your neck.
Let me introduce you to Stephanie Kittell of StephKYoga - She is one of those people that always has a megawatt smile for you and she is super generous with it :)
I had the good fortune to participate in her Yoga for Life class at Spirit loft and was inspired by this little nugget of a stretch. We love this move for a few reasons…
It’s a “Self massage” so it feels like self care. Always nice to approach our own bodies with loving kindness.
It’s a 2-4-1 so it gets into the fascia and the muscle at the same time.
It encourages curiosity. We must explore the sensations of this stretch in order to find the potency.
The front of the neck/chest area gets tight when our shoulders hunch forward - for a multitude of reasons like… prolonged sitting to bracing in cold weather. Sound familliar??!? So the little muscles like the scalenes and SCM get a bit cranky. This can then create a negative loop because these muscles are also the culprit in shallow breathing (see Belly Breathing Blog post). So take a little break from what you are doing, rest your eyes, stretch your anterior neck and follow up with a few rounds of deep belly breaths!
How to do it:
Press hand over hand into the right chest space just below your collarbone .The direction of drag is down + toward armpit.
Stretch your left ear to the left shoulder finding the beginnings of the stretch.
Then you can explore by slowly nodding your head up and down, wag your jaw side to side, stick out your tongue, etc.
Repeat on other side.
If you are at your workplace, do the “additional explorations” in private (lol)
